Introduction
A Legacy Worth Preserving
When Erik and Kassie Hansen began planning for the sale of their business, Greenway Painting, they knew that finding the best successor to carry on Greenway’s legacy mattered more than simply choosing just any buyer.
For more than a decade, they built Greenway into one of Jackson’s most trusted painting businesses, known for expert craftsmanship and dependable crews. Their success was uniquely relationship-driven, built through years of deep ties in the Jackson community, which made finding the right successor essential to preserving both the trust and the quality of work customers depended on.
For Anthony Douglas, Greenway represented the next opportunity in a long leadership journey. After serving in elite special forces units as a Combat Controller in the U.S. Air Force and later building his own painting company from the ground up, he brought the leadership discipline and hands-on industry experience needed to step in as Erik and Kassie’s successor.
In partnership with American Operator, Anthony became the local operator of Greenway Painting in October 2025, stepping in as CEO and a meaningful owner from day one.
Company History
Building A Trusted Name In Jackson
Greenway Painting wasn’t built with an eventual exit in mind.
Erik and Kassie Hansen returned to Kassie’s hometown of Jackson as a young couple. Erik, who had experience leading commercial painting crews worked for a local contractor in town and saw an opportunity others missed: building a year-round painting business by expanding commercial interior work, rather than shutting down seasonally like many local contractors who relied primarily on residential jobs.
Building on Kassie’s deep roots in the community and Erik’s larger-than-life, friendly personality, the Hansens grew the business in a way that was lean, personal, and deeply local. Erik led their painting crew. Kassie ran administration. There was no marketing spend and no cold outreach. Growth came from a hard-earned reputation, luxury-quality craftsmanship people confidently referred to others, and relationships built through years of showing up for customers and neighbors alike.
Before long, Greenway became the go-to call for painting work around town. By 2024, approximately 90 percent of its revenue came from commercial clients, including many of Jackson’s most recognizable buildings and local institutions, with the remaining 10 percent from residential work. While jobs are bid on a per-project basis, roughly 85 percent of revenue comes from repeat customers, reflecting the long-standing trust Erik and Kassie built within the Jackson community.
That community-driven foundation made Greenway a resilient business, but a decade later, as Kassie and Erik felt the pull to move to Arizona to be closer to Erik’s father, the prospect of handing the business to a new owner became especially daunting.
Finding The Right Successor
Choosing Who Comes Next
As Erik and Kassie began exploring Greenway’s future, the typical options available to owners selling their business did not fit the kind of business they had built. Wall Street funds, roll-up platforms, or operators who planned to manage the business remotely were not just unappealing, but felt like a risk to everything they had worked to build.
As Erik put it plainly, “We were most concerned about the owner or who could continue it on. The boots on the ground mattered.” Clearly, Selling Greenway was not just a business decision. It was emotional, weighty, and deeply personal. Kassie reflected that, “We didn’t want to let people down. Our clients took care of us, and we wanted to take care of them.”
Seemingly out of options, Erik and Kassie were on the verge of deciding to shut the business down altogether rather than risking its reputation. “We were about ready to shut it down,” Erik admitted, “I wasn’t going to risk it. Our reputation means that much to us.”
That conviction set a high bar for who could step in next, and why finding the right successor mattered more than any offer.
Meet The Operator
A New Path To Small Business Ownership For Anthony Douglas
Anthony Douglass’s leadership roots were shaped in U.S. Air Force Special Operations, where he served as a Combat Controller, a role that demands confidence under pressure, accountability to a team, and precise execution in high-stakes environments.
After leaving the military, Anthony brought those leadership and execution skills into the trades and founded his own painting contractor company, Sahuro Painters in Tucson, Arizona. He built the business from the ground up, gaining hands-on experience across estimating, bidding, sales, crew management, and field operations.
While business acquisition was not initially on Anthony’s radar, his years leading teams in the military and direct industry experience made him a best-in-class successor. After being introduced to American Operator and meeting with our Portfolio Talent team, Anthony emerged as the clear choice to be selected to lead Greenway Painting due to his rare combination of character, direct industry experience, and operational discipline.
Partnering with American Operator gave Anthony the opportunity to step into leadership of a much larger, more established company without spending years scaling up revenue or taking on hundreds of thousands of dollars in personal loans and navigating complex acquisition risk to acquire a business of this caliber alone.
Anthony begins as a day-one owner of Greenway Painting with a 10% equity stake, full salary and benefits, and the autonomy to lead the day-to-day operations of the business. Over time, through company performance and share buybacks, he will become the majority owner of Greenway Painting. Through business ownership, Anthony has an extraordinary opportunity to build his piece of the American Dream for his family in Jackson, Wyoming.
Transition Process
Passing The Torch
After being introduced to Erik and Kassie through a broker and bringing the business under contract, the American Operator team got to work preparing a thoughtful transition that built confidence for everyone involved.
For Erik, character mattered just as much as competence. He worried deeply about introducing a successor to long-time clients, unsure how that transition would be received. Those concerns faded quickly when Anthony and the American Operator team visited Jackson for the first time. As Erik recalled, “I was so worried he’d be a square or have no personality,” he laughed. “But he’s just killing it.”
The transition from Erik to Anthony was deliberate and relationship-centered. Erik remained closely involved, personally introducing Anthony to clients and vouching for him within the community.
Anthony’s early focus was not sweeping change. It was continuity. “Maintaining those relationships Erik built over the years was the number one thing for me,” Anthony shared. “People know that when they call Greenway, it needs to be good and professional work.”
That steady approach reassured clients, employees, and partners that Greenway’s values and the quality work they depended on were not changing, even as leadership changed hands.
Our Process
Why American Operator
For both Erik and Anthony, American Operator stood apart from the traditional private equity path. The focus was not on short-term flips or consolidation plays, but on finding the right operator and setting them up for long-term success. “If this were a traditional private equity firm, it wouldn’t have been for me,” Anthony said. “American Operator is different. They’re focused on the operator and on making an impact not just for the company, but for the community.”
The operator-focused approach showed up throughout the transition. The American Operator team guided Erik, Kassie, and Anthony through the entire acquisition process, shouldering much of the administrative and diligence work so Erik and Kassie could focus on preparing the business, and equipping Anthony with all he needed to step into leadership. The deal ultimately closed in just 58 days and was marked with a celebratory dinner on Jackson’s historic square with Erik, Kassie, and Anthony.
Closing on the deal was just the beginning. As a long-term partner, American Operator continues to support Anthony and Greenway Painting with ongoing operational infrastructure, growth and hiring support, and access to a trusted network of advisors, service providers, and partners as the business grows.
A key part of that support is pairing Anthony with Matt Carlson, a long-time painting contractor CEO and American Operator advisor. Having spent decades building and scaling painting businesses, Matt has brought hard-earned perspective to the transition. Matt was involved in selecting Anthony and diligencing the deal, and now meets with him weekly to provide guidance across estimating, crew management, service expansion, and long-term strategy.
As Anthony put it, “It’s hard to put into words how valuable Matt has been. He’s been there and done that, and he helps me see what’s coming before I get there.”
Together, the ownership structure and ongoing support gave Greenway the resources it needs to grow and allowed Anthony to step into local ownership and carry forward Erik and Kassie’s legacy.
A Better Outcome
Continuity for Greenway Painting
For Erik and Kassie, this next chapter marks the completion of their American Dream and a well-earned payout for their years of hard work, but even more importantly, brings deep relief and gratitude. “Passing it to Anthony,” Erik said, “Well, thank God he’s just the best.”
For Anthony, he recognizes ownership is both a meaningful opportunity and a serious responsibility. As he leads Greenway, his focus remains simple: show up, take care of people, and keep Greenway’s standard of craftsmanship and professionalism preserved, while finding new ways to continue to grow the business. Anthony has hit the ground running, expanding service offerings based on his experience in drywall and wallpaper, growing into nearby towns Driggs and Alpine, and securing new commercial work across Jackson with partnerships with local realtors and property management firms.
For American Operator, our partnership with Anthony and the Hansens' reinforces our commitment to helping hard-working Americans own their piece of the American Dream by carrying forward trusted small businesses. Most importantly, keeping Greenway’s doors open to serve the Jackson community reflects our core belief that America is stronger with locally owned businesses and are willing to prove it, one small business at a time.
If you are an experienced operator ready to own and grow a trusted local business, or a small business owner thinking about what’s next, we invite you to partner with American Operator to keep the American Dream alive & locally owned.
