American Operator founder and CEO William Fry wrote this piece for Contractor Magazine aimed directly at plumbing, heating, and trades contractors thinking about stepping away from their businesses.
The article argues that most owners ask the wrong question when planning their exit. Instead of asking who can buy the business, they should be asking who can lead it. The best successors are usually already inside the company, running crews, serving customers, and carrying the reputation the owner spent decades building. The problem is they rarely have the capital or deal experience to buy the business outright, and that mismatch is where most succession plans break down.
Owners who begin preparing three to five years out have more options, more leverage, and more time to develop the right operator rather than scramble for whoever has money when the time comes.
